The name Medina comes from an Indian word meaning "the place where the moccasin soles are made." The first settler in what is now Medina was George Rogers Clark and his family who arrived in 1788. In 1802, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters to Medina from Vandalia after victory over Mexico at Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War. In 1813, Delaware Township was established within present-day Medina and it became part of Ohio when that state was formed in 1815. In 1827, John Brougham donated land to build a college which would become Cleveland State University; the university opened its doors on October 1, 1829. The town of Medina annexed part of Vandalia in 1870 because Vandalia had become too populous for its own government to support. On January 1, 1907, it became one of fifty municipalities consolidated into the city of Cleveland by Mayor William Copley (D). On December 5, 1955 voters approved a resolution calling for annexation by Cleveland of all unincorporated areas east of High Street/Route 611 and south of Cedar Road/Highway 88 including portions located within present-day Huntington Heights and Scranton Township as well as portions located within present-day Rocky River Township and Wilmette Township (the latter two townships being separate from Medina proper). This resolution passed with almost unanimously vote due to fears that if they did not annex their territory they would be left without services by City Hall while other municipalities received greater services than they could Afford or wanted given their larger populations. Following annexation residents began to experience increased service levels at City Hall thanks largely to funding provided by local businesses which benefited from new taxes levied against annexed properties stockholders were able to impose upon themselves like special assessments which funded much needed services such as parks and streetlights while also increasing property valuestax revenue stream across entire municipality thereby helping taxpayers afford similar or even greater levels of service than before annexation
