Mentor, Ohio is a town of just over 8,000 people located in the Athens-Clarke County area of central Ohio. The population was estimated at 12,561 as of 2010. Mentor is home to the University of Toledo and has been called "the business capital of Greater Toledo." The city's economy is based on manufacturing, education, and services. The first firearm that was manufactured in Mentor was an 1851 Enfield rifle used by Captain John A. Brown and his men during the American Civil War. In 1892, Wm. Howerton started a small store in the east side of town which became the largest firearms retailer in the area. In 1903, Jens Jensen opened a gunsmith shop in downtown Mentor which continues to be one of the most popular shops in town today. In 1907, Alonzo Mclntyre opened a grocery store on Main Street which served as the first commercial center for Mentor.
