Middletown, Ohio is home to the world's first gun light show. The display was put on display in 1875 by Elisha Gray and his company. Middletown was founded in 1795 by Dr. Benjamin Rush and his wife Susannah Greenbush after they moved from Newtown, Connecticut. Middletown became a village in 1837 and a town in 1887. The name "Middletown" originated from its location along the Miami River on land that had been purchased by Doctor David Rittenhouse from the Lukens family. The first post office was established at Middletown on July 4, 1827, and was known as "Newtown". In 1840, it changed its name to "Middletown", after General Washington's Headquarters (now Mount Vernon), which lay just to the north of Middletony across the river. One early settler of MiddletOWN was Captain John Bemis who built a store on High Street in 1830-31 while also serving as justice of peace for Stark County. He later sold his property to Simon Snyder and moved to Cincinnati where he died in 1865 aged 82 years old NY State Archives

Middletown was founded in 1796 by General James Wilkinson. The town was named after Middletown, England, where Wilkinson had been born in 1745. Middletown grew rapidly during the 1800s and by 1810 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1815, Wilkinson resigned from his post as governor of Ohio and moved to Middletown with his family. He died there in 1824. In 1814, the United States acquired what is now Michigan Territory from Great Britain and then organized it as a new country, the United States of America. Middletown became part of this new country and remained so for most of its history. The first white residents arrived in Middletown in 1817 when Amos Kendall donated land to establish the town on which it stands today. By 1840, however, only about 10% of the population were black Americans. The 1850 census showed that Middletown had a population of around 200 people; however, within ten years its population had increased to over 1,000 people due to waves of emigration from other parts of Ohio and Indiana (the move led to rapid growth in business and economic activity). By 1860, MiddletOWN's African American community numbered more than 2200 individuals – nearly one-third of all those living in the town at that time! MIDDLETOWN experienced dramatic demographic changes during the late 19th century due to industrialization throughout central Ohio – cotton mills gradually replaced agricultural production as the primarystayof local economy. As these factories produced ever-growing amounts of pollution and noise outside their enclosed workplaces – often polluting fellow citizens' homes as well – many working families increasingly sought refuge inside their own homes or within close proximity to work until conditions improved enough for them to return out into society again (iarnaption theory). This migration served two important objectives: firstly it helped raise money for settlement costs through property acquisition (many African American households were unable or unwilling to sell their home holdings), secondly it HopeTo BETTER WAY OF LIFE" " SUPPORT FOR BLACK AMERICANS" socialized many young black men away from gangs/crime before they turned into hardened criminals who did extensive damage both socially and economically TO WHITE PEOPLE."During this time period also much discussion took place regarding race relations specifically among whites/African Americans living together."During this time period also much discussion took place regarding race relations specifically among whites/African Americans living together...black people found themselves competing with each other for jobs & housing."
