By 1800, there were over 20 businesses in New Franklin including two stores, three taverns, four blacksmith shops and one printing press. During the American Revolutionary War (1776-1802), New Franklin was an important stop on the supply route between Philadelphia and Yorktown. On July 20, 1779, General George Washington marched his army through New Franklin along Second Street to cross into Pennsylvania at Yorktown. Aftermath of the Battle of Saratoga demonstrated just how important this community was to Army forces; more than 350 soldiers died here within 72 hours after landing their supplies ashore! In 1803-1804, when Ohio became a state Uniting all of Great Britain under one government - England - many people moved to Ohio because it became available as a new state without tuition fees or other restrictions imposed by Great Britain!
