The population was 17,593 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Stark County and one of the largest cities in Greater Cleveland. The city is located on a small peninsula between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, bordered by State Route 9 to the north and east, I-71 to the south and west, and Medina Avenue to the northwest. North Royalton was founded in 1824 as Northroydon Township by John Denton, who named it for his grandson Prince Rupert of Brunswick who had died three years earlier at age 10. The township became a city in 1881 when its boundaries were expanded to include what are now parts of Medina and Euclid counties. The downtown area is home to several large employers including Procter & Gamble, IBM, GEICO and JCPenney; as well as many smaller businesses such as Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co., FirstEnergy Solutions Inc., J&J Pizza Place (now known as Joe's Pizza), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken and Hershey Chocolate Industries Inc.. North Royalton has two public libraries - one serving town residents only while another operates online - as well as several civic organizations such as local fire departments (the department which responds to all fires within 1/2 mile of town)and teen pregnancy prevention programs (NCHP). In addition to its traditional retail stores like JCPenney or Sears Holdings Roebuck & Co., North Royalton also has an increasing number of restaurants specializing in Indian food or European cuisine; some examples are Indian born owner Sarika's Palace restaurant ($) which opened in 2006 on Race Street near I-71 exit 30A/30B; Golden Triangle Cafe ($) which opened on Euclid Avenue just east of SR 9 about 2 miles southwest of downtown; Ghee Kung Chinese Restaurant ($) off US 21 about 5 miles west of town near Ashtabula County line; polo field ($$$) straddling I-71 between SR 9A AND 11W about 8 miles northwest from town This largely suburban setting was consistent with plans made before Mayor Tom Smith took office following that year's general election which called for increased development along both Interstate 71W AND Buffalo Road due to strong job growth registered by Procter & Gamble alone across all five metropolitan areas studied.......In 2009 P&G announced they were moving their headquarters from Chesterfield Township into Cleveland amid concerns over crime rates there...... North Royalton, Ohio is a town in Shiawassee County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. In 1814 the area that now makes up North Royalton was part of the Northwest Territory under the auspices of the United States Congress. When it became part of the state of Ohio in 1827, it became part of what is now Shiawassee County. The town was platted in 1830 and named for General David Wilkinson who fought against Native Americans and served as superintendent of Indian Affairs for much of central Ohio during the 1830s. NorthRoyalton's first store opened in 1834 on Main Street. It remained operational until 1957 when it burned down. A new store was built and operated until 1968 when it also burned down. In 1865 a post office called "Aliquippa" was established in what is now North Royalton; however, this post office closed due to lack of customers by 1870. Aliquippa would be re-established as an address some time later but would again close due to lack of customers by 1890
North Royalton was founded in 1803 by John D. Rockefeller, Sr. It became a city in 1903 and was named for the family's home on North Royalton Road. The city experienced a population growth during the 20th century, reaching its peak in 1967 with over 50,000 residents. However, since 2000 North Royalton has been declining in population while experiencing economic decline.
