He brought over some European strains of maize that had been brought over by American farmers and developed them into a new strain which became known as "Cleveland corn" . The original name for Painesville was "New Salem". It was renamed to its current name in 1847 when the Erie Canal passed through the town and new land became available for settlement. The first settler in Painesville was John Smith who arrived in 1796. In 1801, he married Sarah Hagerty and together they started a farm on what is now First Street near present day High School. By 1810, Smith had four children and decided to move away from his farming life to form a new village with himself as its first mayor. That same year he donated $1,000 towards the erection of an academy which would eventually become Western Reserve University. Smith's donation helped build one of Northeast Ohio's most important institutions. In 1814 Samuel Clay founded Clay Bank which soon became one of northeastern Ohio's leading banks and served as a model for many other banks across the region over the next century. One of Clay Bank's early presidents was James Girdis who also founded Girdis & Company grocery store on Canfield Avenue in downtown Painesville in 1903 (now known as Girdis' Place Books & Gifts). Another early painesvilleer was George Biddle who served as treasurer of Lucas County from 1825 until his death in 1830 after serving two terms consecutively; Biddle also founded Biddle Paper Mill on Lima Road northeast of downtown Painesville in 1830 out OF necessity due to lack of paper mills locally at that time! During much of this time there were few paved roads or even sidewalks within town limits so many residents had to walk or ride their horses/carts all around their neighborhoods! Today some street names still reflect this history such as Canfield Ave., High St., Franklin Rd., etc...
