Portsmouth is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is the county seat of Muskegon County. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon–Thousand Lakes Metropolitan Statistical Area. Portsmouth was founded by Frenchmen in 1795 as Pemaquid. In 1814 it was renamed Portsmouth after its founder, Commodore John A. Smith (1761-1836), who had commanded an American squadron during the Napoleonic Wars and became a leadingfigure in post-war America. In 1828 it passed to Michigan Territory and became part of that state in 1833; but its status as a county seat never changed until 1907 when it was granted municipal status by the state government of Michigan under the so-called "municipal Improvement Act". Portsmouth's economy has been based largely on manufacturing since its founding and continues to be so today; however, recent years have seen some growth in services such as retail trade and healthcare. The town also has a rich religious history with many churches dating back to pioneer days including First Methodist Church which still stands today, started by Methodists from neighboring Rochester Hills in 1827.

Portsmouth, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the Sandusky River. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. The first permanent European settlers in Portsmouth were citizens of French Canada who arrived in 1764 and built a fort on the east bank of the river. They were followed by English colonists from Connecticut in 1775 and they founded a town called "Nanticoke" on what is now downtown Portsmouth. The name "Portsmouth" was given to the town by General John Forbes after he destroyed Fort Nanticoke (now part of Cleveland) during the Northwest Indian War in 1775. In 1801, Portsmouth became an incorporated village with a population of about 100 people when it joined Putnam County. It remained an unincorporated village until 1907 when it became part of Portage Township. In 1911, it merged with Muskegon Heights to form Muskegon Heights-Portage Township annexation
