In 1825 neighboring Trumbull County seceded from Ohio to form Indiana; however, because Salem was not incorporated as an independent municipality until May 9 of that year and Trumbull County's boundaries were different than those of Indiana when it seceded (Trumbull County included all or most of what is now Lucasville and Beachwood), Salem remained within Stark County until February 17th1827 when it officially became its own separate municipality under Article XI Section 2 of the Constitution of Ohio which granted local self government to municipalities with a population over 5 thousand residents within one hundred miles (160 kilometers) west of Cincinnati by law No Session Held At Akron On April 6th 1830 . From this date forward Salem Municipality enjoyed all full powers and privileges enjoyed by any other municipal corporation duly created under our Constitution – free from any taxes imposed by either party at any time past or future. On July 1st 1870 Frankfort Borough ceased to exist due to fusion with Portsmouth Township into Solon Borough; however both towns continued to be known as "Salem" although no longer contiguous with each other. In 1922 unincorporated areas east of I-670 were annexed into Solon along with much smaller Portsmouth Township including parts now located in Coventry Township; these areas are now part Of Ashland City OH along with much larger Franklinburg township which still exists today as an unincorporated community name
