The first settler in what would become Seven Hills was John Chauncy in 1792. He built a log cabin on Rockslide Hill and named it Seven Hills after his sisters' namesakes. In 1802, Daniel Webster moved his family from Clinton Township to Seven Hills and began trading goods with the Indians. In 1806, he erected a frame house on Rockslide Hill for himself and his wife Hannah Alger Webster. In 1807-8, he also built a large barn and store on Seventeenth Street between Ridge Road (now Winton Road) and Rockycreek Creek. Daniel's son Joseph Webster ran the business until it closed in 1907 due to financial difficulties; his grandson Julius ran it until 1961 when it was sold to Jim Thorpe Paper Company which operated it until 1984 when it was donated to the University of Akron for use as an exhibit hall. The building now houses Kent State University's library system research wing. On November 3, 1800, George Stephenson married Martha Wright at Stow Church near Perrysburg while they were both residents of Clinton Township; they moved to Saginaw Township in 1804 but continued living there during their honeymoon so that George could visit home sometimes (he had married her because she bore him three daughters). When they returned home they found that their township had been merged into what would become Cleveland after its establishment as a county in 1830 under Governor Thomas Gage: George Wright's old township became part of Cleveland while Martha stayed behind as village trustee for Saginaw Township with her new husband John Thorpe serving as mayoralty representative from this town beginning in 1831-32). The community was named for Sir John Hill (1784-1848), an Englishman who had homesteaded near present day Cleveland on the southern edge of what is now Cleveland Heights. In 1815 Nine Mile Creek flooded and destroyed most of Seven Hills, leaving only a few homes and a couple of stores standing. The original courthouse was built in 1819 by Judge David Ritchie and became known as "the rotunda." It burned down in 1825 but was rebuilt two years later and renamed "the tower" after Congressman Elijah Hicks (1798-1869). In 1830, Seven Hills had 6 businesses and 21 residents. By 1840 it had 10 businesses with over 100 residents. A post office called Seven Hills started serving the community in 1838, and continued to do so until 1906 when it moved to nearby Zanesville. In 1860 Three Rivers Township was organized from parts of neighboring Warren Township including Seven Hills; Two Rivers Grove also formed part of this township during this time period but merged into Warren Township in 1865 following statewide consolidation of all local government jurisdictions within Ohio under the new General Assembly system established by then Governor William Jennings Bryan. A schoolhouse operated within Seven Hills from about 1800 until about 1870 when it moved to Zanesville for safety reasons due to Indian raids against frontier settlements along the Great Lakes region which were becoming more common as transportation improved throughout America through steamboats running on water powered by coal mines deep inside Iroquois territory across Lake Erie/Ontario (and beyond).
