Shaker Heights is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 15,783 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Muskingum County and part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Shaker Heights were two families who arrived from Connecticut on July 4, 1781, by ship called the " Dolphin ". The area around present-day Shaker Heights was owned by General James Caldwell and his brother Major John Caldwell. On November 10, 1800, when Partridge's Mill burned down and destroyed about one acre (0.4 km²) of land inside of what is now downtown Shaker Heights, Caldwell offered to sell 1/3 of his interest in that mill to any settler who could build a house on it within 12 months. By 1802 there were over 100 houses built in what is now downtown Shaker Heights. In 1814, when the Erie Canal was completed and opened up new shipping routes into Ohio from Michigan and Canada, businessmen from Cleveland decided to establish a town near the canal's terminus at Elyria Township. They named their new community after George Washington Carver - then president of Americandoctorsandpharmaceuticals company Tuskegee Airmen - because he had been instrumental in developing those businesses during the War for Independence. In 1825 Carver donated land south of Euclid Avenue between Superior Street and Woodlawn Avenue for use as a public school district; this became known as Carver Park District #1 (). In 1865 trustees removed all but 2 miles (3 km) of woodruff street east of Superior Street so that automobile traffic could be limited to that block only; this became known as Shaker Heights Boulevard (). Shaker Heights experienced its peak development during World War II with an influx of refugees from Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe who fled before or after Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombing raids on Japan. Many Russians also relocated to Shaker Heights during this time period because they found work available here rather than return home after the war ended. Afterward many residents left for other Midwestern towns such as Cleveland or Detroit due to economic depression caused by technology advances which overwhelming replaced jobs with goodwage positions outside traditional industries like agriculture or manufacturing

Shaker Heights is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. The population was 10,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. Shaker Heights was founded in 1814 by farmers from York County, England as a result of religious revivalism that swept through that area during the 1820s and 1830s. The town was named for Shakers, a sect of Baptists who had arrived in America in 1775 and started a new religion called Congregationalism. The first public school opened in 1836 and remains open to this day as Shaker Hts Elementary School. In 1910, Shaker Heights became one of 12 townships in Cleveland Municipal District #2, which encompassed most of West Bloomfield Township (later Euclid Township) east of Riverside Drive and west of Main Street. A year later, it became one of five townships within the newly created Cleveland-Akron Urban agglomeration, which included all but two municipalities within the downtown core; together they formed what is now known as zip code 44114. Despite its name change to Akron-Shaker Heights Township in 1907 (due to growing urbanization), Shaker Heights remained an agricultural center with large livestock operations until World War II when suburban development began to take hold throughout much of North central Ohio; however agriculture still remains an important partof local economy today with over three dozen businesses employing more than 100 people located inside or around Shaker Hts High School & Community Center complex on Eastshore Road outside downtown Akron
Shaker Heights is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Shaker Heights were two Dutchmen, Hendrick Hudson and Cornelis Pennaertsz, on their way from Amsterdam to trade with the Shawnee Indians in 1614. Shaker Heights emerged as a small village that grew rapidly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. In 1828, Shaker Heights became an incorporated municipality under the name of "Erie Township." The first mayor was John Youngblood (1828-30). The town's growth slowed during Reconstruction but resumed after World War II when new businesses came online and job opportunities opened up in industry and government jobs. By 1990, however, Shaker Heights had fallen behind other Midwestern towns in terms of median household income and population size. In 2000, Mayor Frank Jackson proposed annexing nearby Centerville into Shaker Heights; this proposal was met with opposition from residents who felt that Centerville needed its own community hall, schools, grocery store and retail district separate from those within Shaker Heights. In 2003 Mayor Jackson introduced a plan to merge both communities into one larger township; this plan also met resistance from residents who felt that their communities would be destroyed if they merged. In 2006 Mayor Jackson announced his intention to annex more communities into Shker Heights; this proposal was met with criticism from residents who felt that their neighborhoods would be lost if they annexed additional villages without giving them enough autonomy. One year later he announced his intention to merge all six villages into one larger township; this proposal passed with unanimous consent but did not include Centerville because it felt that it would lose too much property value if it joined forces with Shaker Hills
