The road became known as the Great Western Road and was used by both American troops and travelers seeking access to Canada. After American independence was declared in 1776, many farmers started moving into what is now Streetsboro. By 1814, when Roads Number 2 and 4 were built through the town, Streetsboro had over 200 residents. By 1850, there were only around 50 people living in Streetsboro proper. However, during the early 1800s local businesses began to prosper due to trade with surrounding counties such as Lawrence County and Steuben County. One such business was John Green's Brewery which operated from 1819 until 1830. This brewery produced beer that was sold throughout central Ohio and even abroad. In 1839, Daniel Webster helped found The Methodist Church in Streetsboro which quickly became one of the largest churches in central Ohio along with First Baptist Church (now Univision Chapel) on Main Street which opened in 1840 followed by Stroud's African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church on Elm Street in 1845 . These churches helped pioneer Methodism within their respective communities while also providing social services such as poor relief and housing for immigrants coming into America during this time period
