Toledo experienced significant growth during the 19th century thanks to numerous industrialists and entrepreneurs who established businesses such as Wabash Coal Company, Phelps Dodge Company, Toledo Arsenal (now part of United Defense Group), Rubber Mills Corporation, Ford Motor Company, and other important companies that left an impact on both local and national economies. The city also saw significant population growth during this time period with over 100,000 residents living within its boundaries by 1884. During World War I, Toledo served as a vital air base for American forces fighting in Europe; it also played an important role in providing food for soldiers stationed throughout Europe. Toledo, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. As of 2010, the population was 569,521 and it is the third-largest city in Ohio after Cleveland and Akron. The Toledo metropolitan area had a population of 1,517,021 as of 2011. Toledo is known for its Arts District, which includes the University of Toledo campus and several museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and Detroit Institute of Arts. In addition to its art scene, Toledo also has a large manufacturing sector that employs over 100,000 people in various industries such as automotive Manufacturing and textiles & apparel production. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Ohio was made by fur traders under John Ziegler in 1796 on land south of present-day downtown Toledo when he purchased 8 square miles (20 km2) from The Miami Company for $1 million dollars. Facing competition from New York City's growing port industry during the early 1800s, Ziegler abandoned his venture in 1802 but returned to make another attempt at founding a town on this site some years later with assistance from businessman Moses Chapman. After failing twice to get government support to build a settlement during those two abortive attempts he turned his attention to building an army fortifications along Indian River opposite present day Lucasville while construction continued nearby on what would become known as Fort Gratiot; this fortification became one of America's earliest military successes against Native Americans when it repulsed an attack by British forces led by Colonel John Heard May 3–4 1803 near present day Warsaw. A new town site was selected on High Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Street within sight of Gratiot whereupon George Washington called a meeting among select citizens September 13th 1792 to establish boundaries for the new town which met again November 10th under direction from Washington who appointed David Stone as first Town Clerk; stone served until 1801 when he moved upriver to take charge of Henry Clay's Western Reserve lands northward following Clay's successful admission into Congress as part ofthe First Party System Washington kept watch over development at Toledo until his death in 1807 when Trustee Amos Kendall assumed control superseding Stone In 1813 Mayor David Silliman erected public buildings including frame courthouse upon lot next door then centered block bounded by State Road #3 (now US Highway 60), State Road #4 (now I-75), Third Avenue South (now West Side Drive), Fourth Street North (now East Side Drive) about five blocks eastward from original Town Square currently occupied by United States Courthouse Annex Inaugurated October 15th 1813 with Mayor Silliman presiding – Second Court House built adjacent hereinon February 12th 1840 continuing use thereof until replaced October 15th 1870 Nearby located today: Spruce Township Hall – former jailhouse now used as school room On May 30th 1830 James Auld founded Dearborn School District No 2 consisting onlyofDearborn Township children ages 7 through 12 attending Monday morning classes starting 9am without any tuition or other charges
