After the war ended, many businesses closed or moved away as technology advanced. However, some reopened including Oldsmobile Motors Company which manufactured car bodies in two plants until 1967; Singer Sewing Machine Company which produced wooden dolls until 1984; United Rubbermaid who brought back the process of making Vaseline early in 1987; US Bancorp which opened branches throughout central Ohio until 1994; Erie County Sheriff's Department - Paul Lantz Criminal Investigations Division until 1995; Greater Dayton Chamber of Commerce - Tim Kriegel President & CEO until 1996; United Paperworkers Local 444 - Bettye Goudreau Vice President before that date [the current location]. Many residents left because they could no longer afford to live there or because they relocated to more affordable towns nearby while others decided to stay because they liked what they had seen since 1945 when VanWert started as an Indian village on 4 miles of high banks along the Scioto River near where it still stands today
