Wilmington is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. Wilmington was founded in 1814 by General James Wilkinson and the town of Zionsville. It became a state capital in 1903. In 2000, it merged with Toledo to form the Toledo–Warren–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. The area now includes the cities of Warren and Wilmington as well as the village of Berea. The first Europeans to visit what is now Delaware County were French traders who sailed up the River Cuyahoga on their way from Canada in 1696-97. They named their landing point "Niantic" after Nantucket on Massachusetts Bay, where they had been trading since early 1600s. A new town was founded at this site (now called Zionsville) by General James Wilkinson on April 12, 1814 following his victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Medina Township. The land around Wilmington was purchased from the Miami Nation by Colonel George Catlett and others in 1816 for $10 per acre ($2 million today). On July 13, 1817 Wilmington became part of 10th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry under Lieutenant Colonel Henry Knox while still under construction at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; Columbus served as its colonel until October 1st when he resigned due to ill health In 1800 John Smeaton set up a sawmill and grist mill about one mile east of present day downtown Wilmington on an island in the river opposite where Fort Pitt once stood This millstream bisected what is now Dayton Avenue which ran through Zionsville before turning north towards Dovercourt which led eventually to Buffalo Creek thence east to Cheviot Cemetery where William’s Mill dammed it forming what is today Elmira Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Streets . After Smeaton’s mill closed down about 1850 mills began flowing into Wilmington from other parts of Ohio including First National Bank built just south ofpresent day Fifth Street across Dayton Avenue From First National Bank washing machines (and later dryers) started being made available for rent starting around 1920 The port facilities along Fourth Street were also important during this time with shipbuilding taking place along that stretch including several wooden hulled vessels such as USS Constitution which launched on May 14th 1797 Commodore Perry's flagship “Hudson” Captured off Erie Island February 26th1800 finally arrived off scene June 3rd 1800 ready for her maiden voyage towsome 1to 2 thousand tons but foundered due engine failure near modern day Dovercourt leaving behind 147 men & 23 women & 6 children dying making her one of history's most famous disasters
