Odds are you have never heard of Worthington, Ohio. However, if you were born in the city during the early 1920s or later, then chances are you possess at least one piece of firearms history. That firearm might be a gun part, or it might be something related to the city’s long and contentious relationship with firearms. Worthington was once a thriving community with its own police department and arsenal. But over time, the gunslinger’s code began to dominate Worthington life. In 1919, when Ohio passed a law prohibiting “the carrying any Pistol without a License from A Single Gunsmith or Repairer thereof in any County within this State,” many citizens decided to arm themselves instead. The fact that there were no licensed gunsmiths meant that Residents had to find someone who could fix their weapons- something that often involved dealing directly with criminals and outlaw gangs. This led to an arms race between townspeople and criminals – the latter became known as “The Gunners” because they could always count on having access to firepower whenever they needed it. In 1922, when Ohio repealed its ban on handguns (though not before giving permittees several weeks notice), businesses like Armoury & Firearms Store increased their sales of pistols for self-defense purposes only. At this point in history, violence against women was becoming more common; however, most women didn’t carry firearms for protection reasons (although some did). Instead, they relied on friends or family members for assistance in defending themselves if necessary. It wasn't until 1923 that an ordinance was passed which banned all handguns completely within Worthington limits- making it one of the few cities in America where handgun ownership was illegal by statute rather than by ordinance decree. This decision effectively ceded control of Worthington's pistol market to criminals and individuals who possessed them illegally – another illustration of how strong gun ownership rates were at this point in American history7*. Despite these challenges, pistols continued to be sold throughout Worthington's heyday as both citizens and professionals alike supplemented their arsenals with Second Amendment weaponry*8*. However*, following World War II saw an increase in crime across America(*9*) which led many peopleto choose other forms of defense rather than rely solely upon firearms*10*. In 1949, after years of planning and negotiation between local government officials and sporting goods stores (*11*) Mayor Byron FitzGerald announced plans for what would become known as The Fitzgerald Project - a plan designed to reduce crime by increasing public awareness about dangers associated withguns†12*. Through education campaigns such as Greetings From The City Hall[13], posters campaign(*14*)and even live demonstrations(*15*)Fitzgerald hoped that locals would take precautions such as keeping gunsin locked cabinets away from children**15*. Unfortunately*, despite numerous high-profile successes over the years(*16*),The Fitzgerald Project ultimately failed due largely TO THE STATE OF OHIO'S DOMINANCE OVER GUN CONTROL *17 *. As recently as 1968*, state legislators still refused attempts by local communitiesTo pass ordinances regulatingfirearms *18 *. This law was designed to keep people from carrying weapons on their property without a license. In 1865, three new stores were built in Worthington; one by J.H. White and Sons, another by Prentice & Co., and another by Hogg & Caldwells. These stores became important sources of supply for gun manufacturers throughout Ohio and Indiana.

The town was named for General John Worthington, a hero of the American Revolution and an early settler in this area. The first post office in Worthington was established in 1792. The name was changed to Crawford in 1827. In 1868, construction began on the Worthington-Cleveland Railroad, which became one of the largest railways north of Chicago. The railroad helped bring jobs and development to Worthington and other communities along its route. In 1935, Worthington incorporated as a village and remains so today. On November 3, 1812 William Hanks married Abigail Van Buren at her parents' home in what is now Council Bluffs Township (now Muskegon Heights). They had three children: James (1813-1885), Hannah (1815-1896) and Horace (1817-1909). On November 6 they arrived at Point Pleasant by boat from Kingston with their families after leaving Canada on HMS "Burlington". James served as captain of USS Constitution during the American Civil War while Hannah served as cook aboard ship; Horace also worked on Constitution as an ensign during that time period
