The town of Altus, Oklahoma was founded in 1907 by settlers from the east side of Oklahoma. The town was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Altus on May 1, 1907. In 1916, the Altus Improvement Company was formed to build a water supply and sewer system for the town. The company was successful and soon built a flour mill, a sawmill, an oil refinery and other businesses in Altus. In 1930, theAltus Independent School District was organized. By 1950, the population of Altus had grown to over 10,000 people.
