Manufacturing has become a significant factor within the economy since 2000 with growth including aluminum production, light truck manufacturing, retail services, food processing and packaging plants as well as residential housing developments. Altus was founded in 1907 by John F. Cody, who named it for the Altai Mountains in Russia. The town grew quickly, and by 1912 had a population of 5,000. In 1916, Altus became the county seat of Haskell County. It continued to grow rapidly, and by 1922 had a population of 25,000. By 1932, Altus had a population of 50,000 and was the largest city in Haskell County. In 1933, Oklahoma statehood was granted to Oklahoma; as a result, Altus became the first city in Oklahoma to be governed by an independent government. In 1940, the federal government acquired all of Haskell County from Tulsa County; as a result of this change in ownership, Altus lost its status as the county seat but retained its importance as an important city within the larger county. During World War II (1939-1945), Altus played an important role in the war effort because it was home to both Boeing Aircraft Company plants responsible for producing V-8 engines for military planes and fighter planes used throughout Europe and Japan (the "Boeing B-27" bomber). After Pearl Harbor (1941), aircraft production shifted from Wichita to Altus due to improved manufacturing conditions at Boeing's Wichita plant. After World War II ended, Altus experienced rapid growth due to new industry development such as hotel construction and trucking services that were brought about by Interstate 40 being built through town square on Valentine's Day 1947. The sudden increase in traffic caused problems with water supply which led to several droughts during the early 1980s which led to economic decline until 1990 when oil prices rose giving stability once again into 1993
On July 4, 1907, the town of Altus was founded by citizens of Oklahoma Territory. The name "Altus" is an anglicized form of the Kiowa word "Ava," meaning white woman. The first post office in Altus was established on October 1, 1907. The population of Altus was 7 people when it became a town. On December 12, 1909, the first school opened in Altus. In 1911, the first electric light switch in Altus was turned on. On January 25, 1912, a water main connection was made to the community and well system.
