Bartlesville is a town in Rogers County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tulsa metropolitan area. Bartlesville was founded in 1907 as a community on the east side of what is now Rogers County. The name "Bartlesville" comes from George Washington Bartlett who settled there in 1881 and patented the town name in 1903. The first post office opened in 1907 and was renamed to Bartlesville in 1911 after General John P. Barnard, commander of American forces during World War I and later an OK State Senator. The town grew rapidly with the discovery of oil near its location and soon became one of the most important cities within Tulsa County. By 1920, Bartlesville had become home to over 30 businesses including five banks, two machine shops, four newspapers and six schools. In 1940, when Tulsa City Limits merged with Tulsa to form Greater Tulsa, Bartlesville became one of its original municipalities within that city limits. During World War II many residents left for military service but many returned once hostilities ceased; this created a boom time for industry which continued into the postwar period until it petered out following the recession of 1974-1975 caused by oil price spikes and production declines throughout much Western Europe due to OPEC's embargo against America's domestic production (the Embargo). During these times some local businesses such as those mentioned earlier closed their doors completely or converted to other forms of economic activity while others prospered; however little tangible evidence exists documenting this transition as most records were destroyed during WWII bombings or when Tulsa City Limits moved away from downtowns across town (euphemistically called "Disaster housing"). Bartlesville was founded by General Orville Bartlett in 1907. It is the only city in Oklahoma and the county seat of Haskell County. The population of Bartlesville was 23,898 at the 2010 census. The area that now makes up Bartlesville was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 1800s. Some of these settlers also came from eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. By 1905, more than a thousand people lived in Bartlesville, including seventy-six farmers and four merchants. The city's growth began slowly but steadily over the next decade as businesses such as a grocery store, dry goods store, auto dealership, bank, cigarette factory and gas station increased their presence on Main Street. In 1925, Wichita State University opened its first dormitory and attracted students from all over Oklahoma and Kansas City. This new development helped to create jobs for local residents while also providing access to education for locals and tourists alike. In 1951, Wilbur Haney became the first African American to serve as mayor of Bartlesville when he was elected after winning an election against incumbent John Moidlum Sr.. During his time as mayor, Haney developed initiatives that helped promote economic development within the city limits as well as increasing diversity within the municipal government. He also worked to improve public transportation options within town and created several parks for residents to enjoy during quiet hours. In 1974, voters passed a resolution congratulating President Richard Nixon on his inauguration into office; this event kickstarted what would eventually be known as "the great era of Tulsa" which saw numerous new businesses opening up throughout downtown Tulsa while developing entire neighborhoods east of Third Street into vibrant areas with high-rise apartments towers towering above them – examples can be found across much of Tulsa's inner boroughs today (e.g., Midtown/East Downtown). Today, there are still many businesses operating in downtown Bartlesville despite difficult competition from neighboring Tulsa cities such as Tulsa Mayor Kathy Shelton's insistence that all business properties in town should be sold off or razed altogether due to her belief that downtown Tulsans should focus on creating job opportunities rather than preserving historical landmarks/. However it is safe to say that although times have changed significantly since then (population density has exploded outside central Tulsa), some things have not: creativity has not gone out of style; bartenders know how to make drinks even if they don't have any ingredients – something locals often take pride in; OKC culture remains strong even when transplants move here (a few notable exceptions include popular nightlife spot Nobu cigar shop owner Drew Houston moving here from Chicago); small towns like BartlesVILLE continue to thrive thanks largely to theirCommunity Development Block Grant program which provides funds towards infrastructure upgrades such as playgrounds or water systems for community members who maintain their integrity
