Today, Bixby is a small village located about 30 miles north of Tulsa on Interstate 44. George Washington Bixby was born on July 12th, 1851 in what is now Fulton County, Georgia. He came to Oklahoma Territory in 1861 after fighting in the American Civil War as a sergeant with Company A of the Sixth Cavalry Regiment of General Ulysses S. Grant’s army. Afterward he began farming and saw action at Fort Gibson (now Muskogee) and elsewhere before settling near present-day Guthrie in 1871. Shortly thereafter he married Anna Maria Hensley and together they started a grocery store that would grow into one of Oklahoma’s largest employers – serving customers from all over central Oklahoma until it closed its doors in 1951! Bixby initial land holdings were modest but his business acumen led him to develop an extensive ranching operation which yielded significant profits over time – making him one of the most successful ranchers ever to reside withinOklahoma!
