However, over time there have been many improvements made to the community including: a school house built in 1912; an churches erected between 1913-1915; a public library opened in 1917; an ambulance service established in 1929; and an industrial park developed around 1960 which attracted companies such as Coca Cola (later Pepsi), Ford Motor Company (later Mercury) and other major employers like Boeing Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas). Today there are only a few remnants of these early days such as some old buildings still standing along US Highway 66 south of town or evidence that Heckman Feed Mill operated here until 1974 when it closed down due to lack of customers relative to other feed mills around town.
