Durant was born on November 1, 1940 in Durant, Oklahoma. He is an American professional basketball player who has played for the Golden State Warriors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Durant attended high school at Blue Valley High School in Durant. In his senior year, he led Blue Valley to a state championship and was MVP of the Class 6A state championships game. Durant then went on to attend college at Oklahoma City University (OKCU) where he played for coach Rick Majerus's team from 1961 to 1966. In his first season with OKCU, Durant led the Sooners to the NCAA Men’s Division I Championship game where they lost 83-59 to UCLA Bruins. The following season, he helped lead OKCU to its third straight NCAA Men’s Division I title and their first national championship since 1959. During his three seasons at OKCU, Durant averaged 17.9 points per game and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting 46 percent from 3 point range and 63 percent from the free throw line. After three years of developing as a player at Oklahoma City University, he was selected by the Golden State Warriors in the 1967 NBA draft with the twelfth pick overall. After being waived by Golden State before playing one regular season games for them, he signed with Philadelphia 76ers of the NBA for their inaugural season in 1968–1969 but did not play any games due to injury issues that plagued him during his rookie campaign with Philly.
