Enid is a small town in the Tulsa metropolitan area in north-central Oklahoma. It is located on the banks of the Arkansas River, about 20 miles northeast of Tulsa. The population was 15,883 as of the 2010 census. The Enid community was founded in 1881 by John Neely Bryan and his wife, Anna (née Rice). Bryan had been born in Enid, and his parents were both natives of that city. He later served as mayor of Enid from 1945 to 1949. In 1951, he became the first African American to be elected to the Oklahoma legislature. In 1966, he was elected governor of Oklahoma and held that office until 1973 when he resigned to run for Congress again. He won election to that seat but lost re-election in 1978; however, he continued to serve as an MPP until his death in 1980. Bryan's son, also named John Neely Bryan (1925–2010), played an important role in developing Enid into a thriving local town during its early years. Many residents who knew him well remember him as "Jeb" – or "Jellybean" – because they would call out when they needed groceries or gasoline quickly enough for him not to wait long at the store before returning home with their purchases! Jeb also helped start several businesses within Enid during his time there: including a grocery store and two fast food restaurants which remain operational today. One such restaurant is now known as Big Jim's BBQ & Chili Bar - one of only a few remaining original businesses from those days! Johnnie Earl Boren (baptized October 8th 1930) served as Mayor of Enid from 1990 until 2002 and then Asst Sheriff from 2002 until 2006; he also represented District 2 on the Tulsa County Commission since 2004 prior thereto serving three terms total since joining that body after leaving City Hall. Boren is currently running for Mayor again this year against incumbent Drew Carey; results are expected shortly thereafter! In addition to his political career accomplishments, Boren has been involved with many civic organizations throughout his life including membership dues-paying memberships with Kiwanis Club International (the world's oldest continuously operating professional Scout organization) and Philbrook Academy where he served on multiple board committees over the course of several decades retiring at 86 years old - making him one of youngest ever graduates from Philbrook Academy! During World War II, the city supported military activities by manufacturing munitions from local resources such as aluminum and oil shale. In recent years, Enid has experienced significant growth due to its key role within the Tulsa-Municipal District No. 1 school district which has seen enrollment swell by more than twenty thousand students since 2000 alone. The downtown area has seen construction of new businesses and residences as well as an increase in cultural events throughout the year including symphonic music concerts and art shows galore!
