Beeson platted what is now downtown Guthrie on land that had been part of Sheridan Township. The town’s growth continued unabated until World War II when most of the manufacturing base shifted from downtown to Tulsa or McAlester because of wartime demand for materials such as warplanes and tanks. In 1932, Milt Raymond opened his general store at Fourth Street and Main Avenue known then as Raymond’s General Store and has continued to serve as one of town’s principal businesses ever since. For over fifty years he has acted as a mainstay for locals during times of drought or need for groceries unavailable anywhere else in town; often taking items off shelves early morning so customers could get them before they ran out! Today’s Raymond Familyowned Business still offers a wide variety including groceries, hardware, sporting goods and more! During World War II many soldiers came through Guthrie on their way home from fighting overseas; giving rise to what is now known as “The Drive-in Daycare Center” which stood right outside downtown until 1978 when Interstate 35 bypassed the village completely creating today's business district along I-35 east of downtown! What began as a small daycare quickly turned into one of town's most popular tourist attractions thanks largely to its unique architecture – features include Art Deco neon signs (now gone), clown corrals (now demolished) and an impressive 38′ tall water tower that once served as both a public address system for local businesses during wartime service operations and also served as an advertising billboard!

It wasn't until 1978 that Tulsa began to overtake Guthrie as the largest municipality in Oklahoma City; however, both cities continue to maintain strong ties with one another thanks to their shared history and culture.

Guthrie's prosperity derived from its location on the Arkansas River, its population of industry and agriculture, and its position as a ferry point on the Missouri River. In 1937, Guthrie became an incorporated city. In 1951, it merged with nearby Claremore to form Oklahoma City.
