During World War II, Jenks played an important role in defense against Japanese bombing raids by manufacturing ammunition for American forces stationed in OKC and other states. In recent decades,Jenkins has seen steady growth as a center for agriculture and ranching operations with several thousand acres (100 hectares) of farmland still under cultivation. In addition to its agricultural base,Jenkins boasts some impressive tourism attractions including two casinos - one operated by Resorts Casino Kennywood Resort & Spa and one operated by Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino - as well as four hospitals: Tulsa Regional Medical Center; Guthrie Memorial Hospital; Cox Children's Hospital; and Baptist Health System Tulsa Downtown Campus hospital - all located within 1 mile (2 km) of each other. Jenks is a small town in Payne County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,594 at the 2010 census. Jenks is the county seat of Payne County and the community of Overbrook is its largest village. The first recorded mention of Jenks was in 1892 when it was called "Natchez". The name may have been derived from the French word for "net" or "spruce tree", as there were spruce trees growing around Jenks at that time. In 1907, Jenks had a post office and two stores. The first store was built by John A. Jenkins and his wife Maybelle Hanks Jenkins on the east side of town in 1907. In 1912, an incorporated municipality named Jenks was formed with a population of fifty people and began to operate a school system. On July 1, 1914, Jenks became part of Guthrie Township when Guthrie Township was created from parts of Payne and Ottawa Counties.
