Jenks, Oklahoma is a small town located in Muskogee County, Oklahoma. The population was 12,871 at the 2000 census. Jenks became an official U.S. city in 1907 and was named after John A. Jenks, a rancher who had contributed $5,000 to help build the first post office in the area. The city has since grown to over 20,000 residents and is the county seat of Muskogee County. The history of Jenks begins with its location on the Arkansas River on what is now the north side of Muskogee County. In 1871, John A. Jenks donated land for a new post office which he called Jenksville; this name remains today and is used by most locals for their local government building as well as their school district headquarters (the old High School building still stands). In 1907, when Tulsa became an official U.S. city, Jenks became one of its original four cities and was renamed after John AJenks himself-an event that helped increase business activity within the small town and make it more prosperous than ever before! Today, Jenkins retains much of its rural character which makes it a great place to live – there are many interesting places to explore such as nearby Anadarko National Forest or Cherokee Nation Tribal Land just off I-40 – but also plenty of grocery stores and other businesses making life easier for everyone! The town was named for Major General George Armstrong Jenks who played a significant role in the Mexican-American War and later became Governor of Oklahoma. The present day city of Jenks was founded on January 16th, 1907 by a group of settlers from Hutchinson County.
