Jenks, Oklahoma is a small town in the extreme east-central corner of the United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jenks, OK Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in Jenks were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who came from Quebec in 1680 to claim land along the Arkansas River for France. They named their new village "Jenks" after Jean Baptiste de Jenkin, an officer with France's forces at Fort Worth during the Seven Years' War. The community grew slowly until 1881 when a railway was built that directly connected Jenks with Tulsa. At that time, Jenks had one grocery store and one post office. In 1905, another railroad was built that linked JenKS with Norman, OK making it easy for people to get around and connecting them to other parts of Oklahoma through transportation. In 1964, whenJenkins County became Oklahomans by becoming a part of Oklahoma Statehood, residents voted to change its name to "Oklahoma City." This vote followed years of discussion about what should become the county's official name and it has been called "Oklahoma City" since then. The city has grown rapidly since then and more than tripled its population in just 25 years! Today there are over 1 million people living in Oklahoma City – more than any other city within state boundaries!
