Jenks is a small town in Oklahoma, located on the Republican River. It was founded in 1887 by Horace Jenks and his wife, Emma. The Jenks Manufacturing Company was one of the first companies to arrive in Jenks, and it still active today. The company produced agricultural commodities such as flour, cornmeal, baking powder, and sugar. In addition to its manufacturing operations, the Jenks Manufacturing Company also served as a social center for the community until it closed its doors in 1978. The history of Jenks goes back even further than that. Afterhorace Jenks discovered oil near present-day Jenkinsville in 1907, he began exploration and development of the land around his property. By 1912, Jenkinsville had been renamedJenks afterHorace’s father-in-law, John Jenkins. Over time, other businesses followed suit: the Jenncks Ferryboat Line (1934), Wilfred Kapp Tire & Rubber Co.(1938), and finally Jerry’s restaurant (1982). These businesses have all since closure or have passed away within recent years; however their memories live on through their descendants who continue to callJenks home. Today, much of what makes upJenkins has changed over time as well – but its culture hasn’t. The Community Development Block Grant program has helped drive growth in local businesses throughout the town while preserving many of its unique aspects; for example, there is still a grocery store on Main Street named after Horace Jenkins Sr., who founded it more than 60 years ago! The community was founded in 1881 by John Jenkins and his wife Anna Griggs Jenkins. It became a city on May 3, 1907. The current mayor is Donny Laddie and the City Council includes Kathy Hennepin (mayor), Cheryl Hillinger (councilwoman), Russ Jennings (city councilman), Rick Wesson (city councilman), and Donnie Pumphrey (city councilman). The history of Jenks goes back to 1881 when John Jenkins and Anna Griggs Jenkins set up shop near what is now downtown Jenks with a few logs they had found while rounding up cattle on their farm northeast of town. They named the place "Jenkinsville" after themselves and began trading goods with other farmers in the area. By 1886, there were enough residents in Jenkinsville to call themselves a town - but it wasn't until 1907 that it became known as "Jenkinsville." In 1911, an act was passed by the Oklahoma Legislature which designated Jenks as the county seat for Muskogee County - making it one of only two towns in Oklahoma still unaffected by statehood during that time period! A new courthouse was built soon afterward and served as theseat of government until 1928 when Jenks voters approved an amendment to their municipal charter allowing for city status! On December 20th of that year, Mayor Donny Laddie proclaimed "Jenkinsville" a City! In 1948-1949, construction began on what would become known as Memorial Stadium - home of both local high school football teams until 2003-2004 when they moved to nearby McClain High School. That same year saw the first professional soccer game ever played in OKC when Tulsa Hotspur FC took on Wichita Stars FC at Memorial Stadium! During those years too many things happened within Jenks' walls - such as rise to prominence within agriculture thanks to planting efforts spearheaded by Mrs. Grace Goodnight; growth into an significant center for medical tourism due to Styne Hospital becoming operational; establishment of several successful businesses including Anheuser Busch Beverages who founded their own bottling plant here; designation as one of America's fastest growing cities due to job growth across all economic sectors brought about by technological advancements; numerous arts events taking place throughouttown from music festivals through art shows to poetry readings etc.; increase in housing stock resulting from various real estate ventures undertaken herein over time...the list goes on and on!! Today you can find plenty of reminders that Jenks has been here since 1907 – most notably Memorial Stadium which hosts both local high school football games and professional soccer matches each season…AND Styne Hospital which serves as one stop for healthcare resources for locals & visitors alike!!!
