Jenks was founded in 1907 by James W. Jenks and his wife, Lillie. TheJenks family operated a general store and post office until the early 1920s when they began to grow cotton. The Jenks family also built a small mill which they operated until 1938. In the early 1940s, the United States War Department requisitioned land in Jenks for use as an airfield; the town ceded ownership of their property to the Army on December 1, 1942. The Air Force used Jenkins Field from 1945 to 1947 as a training ground for pilots during World War II. The Air Force closed Jenkins Field in 1947 and all military uses ended; Jenkins then reverted back to civilian control and formed part of the city government. From 1951-1957, Jenkins had its own school board which disbanded when it merged with other school boards in Oklahoma City. In 1957,Jenkins became an independent city under statehood and has since grown into one of Tulsa's most vibrant cities with over 60 years of history!
