The city's name comes from a Shawnee word meaning "meeting place." The first European settlers arrived in 1851, when a group of men led by Major John Crouch crossed over from Canada and founded what is now Midwest City on land that had been granted to them by Mexico as part of the Treaty of Paris after their war with American Indians. Many small towns and villages were established throughout Oklahoma during this time, but Midwest City became one of the most important due to its strategic location between two major rivers and its importance as a trading post between Canada and Texas. In 1907, Midwest City was designated as the capital of Tulsa County after being selected because it was considered to be an ideal site for such a large town because of its centrality within easy reach of all three counties and its close proximity to several Indian reservations that formed part of Tulsa County's population. During World War II, Midwest City played an important role in providing food supplies for troops stationed along British Colombia's border with North America. The city also manufactured munitions used by Allied forces during Europe's conflict. After World War II, many residents moved out to ranching country near Interstate 44 or other suburban areas outside downtown; however, downtown remained significant until the early 21st century when development began nearby on Third Street which provides access to downtown services while prohibiting automobile traffic within blocks thereof

By the end of World War II, Midwest City had seen some growth again but had also lost much of its business activity.
