Muskogee, Oklahoma is a small city in the US state of Oklahoma. It is located on the Muskogee River and is part of the Tulsa Metropolitan area. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in Muskogee were the Kiowa and Caddo people who arrived from Texas in 1834. In 1907, Charles Fenton built Fort Hays on the current site of City Hall. The town's name comes from Chief Muscogee (or Moccasin Man) who fought for Washington against Native Americans during the American Revolution. In 1881, General Edward Canby founded Stroudsburg College in what is now Muskogee and donated land to make it a college town. The town was renamed Muskogee after Canby in 1902. In 1908, J P Morgan established World Bank headquarters here which remains today one of the most visible symbols of downtown Muskogee's stature today. From 1942-1945, during World War II, the city was home to more than 12000 military members who barracks were erected throughout downtown including Soldiers' and Sailors' Home #1 which still stands today as an historical landmark; First Baptist Church which served as a hospital; various businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Litton Bros., Goudy Company and other major local employers.; also located Downtown were four airfields used by USAAF bombers while stationed at Tulsa Army Air Field; Joe Louis Arena opened in 1961 became home to both OKC Thunder basketball and professional wrestling bouts until its demolition in 2006 resulting in 2 blocks being dedicated to arts & culture.; many Broadway theaters closed down following national recession beginning with 2000's "Oklahoma Shakespeare production" at Joe Louis Arena that led to increased competition for theater space.: due largely to this influx of civilians intotown during post-9/11 America growth rates have continued upward trending making Muskogee one of fastest growing cities within Oklahoma history according as well as most ethnically diverse large U S metropolitan areas.. The oil boom of the 1920s and 1930s led to development in Muskogee of a large manufacturing district. This area now includes much of downtown Muskogee as well as areas around eastern Wichita Falls and southeastern Tulsa. The first permanent settler in what is now Muskogee County was William McIntosh in 1868. He platted a town called McIntosh on the Arkansas River near present-day Tulsa. In 1869 James Ketchum founded the town of Vincennes on the east side of Attica Creek near present-day Tulsa. Ketchum named it after his friend General Andrew Jackson, who had been U.S. President when he served as General Manager of Indian Affairs for Kansas Territory during the Civil War years (1865-1867). In 1871 Dutch Bros., an American company, built a mill on the north bank of Muskegon River about 6 miles west ofpresent-day Muskogee City. A cotton gin followed soon afterward and also produced flour, tobacco products, cattle feed, lumber and other commodities for export to Europe and Asia. One early wagon trainloads of slaves were brought from Africa by traders from Fort Gibson in 1853–54; they were used to cultivate cotton fields around what is now Tulsa between Jenks Creek (now part of Owasso) and Canadian River before being taken back across Canada into Mexico where they were sold to white settlers there or returned home again through routes along the Texas/Mexico border.
