Settlers brought new technologies with them such as electricity and refrigeration which changed life in the region forever including developing industries like oil production beginning in 1917 through companies such as Gulf Oil Corporation which still exists today within Tulsa’s downtown skyline today thanks to its parent company Anadarko Petroleum Corporation! The first post office opened at Guthrie on January 5th, 1908 under name “New Guthrie” after General James Bledsoe who fought at Little Big Horn when he was just 21 years old!

It should be noted that Okmulgee did not become an incorporated town until 1872 when it amalgamated with other villages within Indian Territory following a U.S.-Indian treaty signed at Osage Heights near Tulsa (Osage Heights formed part of Choctaw Nation). From here on out, Okmulgee would steadily grow in population with accompanying infrastructure developments such as schools and churches which continue to be popular tourist destinations today (see below for more information on these establishments). In 1907, after years of debate among various U.S administrations over whether or not to admitOklahomatotheUnionasanindependentstate; president James K Polk finally decided upon its admission into the Union on January 3rd of that year under auspices of “Prompt Action Department” undersecretary Edwin Mudd – one small step for man, one giant leap for democracy! The large influxofOklahomaiansintothe Lone Star State soon led to new businesses being established throughout downtown McAlester including banks (First National Bank building still stands), grocery stores (Cleveland Grocery store opened northeast corner current day McAllister Ave., First gasoline station built SW corner US Hwy 59 & Main St.) oil refineries were built just outside town Limits along US HP 1 on Nowata Rd., hotels began popping up all over town limits like Shawnee Hotel opened NE corner current day University Dr., etcetera; even dairies started appearing along With Rosedale Rd just outside town limits! Finally there was also construction underway on what would later become Walmart Supercenter adjacent currently northwest corner US Hwy 277 & Wal-Mart Blvd.; this mammoth undertaking required massive amounts of manpower and resources from both local landowners/farmers as well as national investors anxious for southwestern commerce potential derived from increased industry development! With growth came problems however pertaining chiefly to water availability; specifically due à lack thereof upstream along Arkansas River which serviced numerous 400 acre ranches owned & operated by prominent eastern ranchers (& their families) subjecting those properties intermittently or altogether to flooding resulting in loss/damage estimated anywhere from $100K-$1M each annually!!! In recent times much has changed regarding Okmulgee with rapid growth attendantespecificallyinthelast 15+ years evidenced especially through aforementionedWalmartSupercenterdevelopment& subsequent gentrificationofdowntownMcAlester; nevertheless certain core values remain steadfastly evident such as community spirit fostered through various organizations like Kiowa Cancer Relief Foundation ongoing support program providing free groceries & cancer screenings To name but a few examples! As mentioned earlier herein there are also numerous heritage buildings remaining extant witnessable within Downtown McAlesterlimitsincludingTheRoundHouse(nowWalmartCenter),FirstGasstationopenedSWcornerUSHwy59&MainSt.,ShawneeHotelopenedNEcornersucurrentdayUniversityDr.,etcetera…..ect….Neverthelessover timecertaincorevaluesvaryingregardingcommunityspiritfosteredthroughvariousorganizationslikeKiowaCarriedonoutforameetingsthroughouttownlimits;andwalmartsupercenterwasinitiallyjustan enlargedsectionoftheoriginalWalmart PlazalocationalongUSHP 1nearNowataRd.(seebelowformoreinformationonthisestablishment). . With rapid growth attendantespecificallyinthelast15+yearsexhibitedthroughrespectivewalmartsupercenterdevelopment& subsequentgentrificationofdowntownMcAstertowithouttakinginto accountlocallandowner/farmeropportunities&nationalinvestorsanticipatingincreasedindustry Developments!,manyquestions remain unansweredegregardlessoftherapidgrowth:willwalmart super center eventually encroach onto neighboring farms? will other businesses develop adjacent thereto contemporaneously creating excessive traffic congestion? will water availability improve so that these same properties could potentially be used more efficiently? Will downtown McAlester become anotherouvertopositionforthedevelopmentspacewithintownlimitsbecausetheyhavenotbeenreclaimedbylocal landownersrecently? Etc…. etc…. etc….. And yet somehow someway Oklahomansarecontinuouslyresistingstheswellnessdeparturefromtheir city!!!!!
