In 1907, Stillwater was the first city in Oklahoma to establish an airgun range. The range was located on the east side of town and consisted of three ranges: a rifle range, a shotgun range, and a handgun range. In 1931, the gun range on White Sands Boulevard was closed due to lack of patronage. However, it reopened in 1934 as the Stillwater Rifle & Pistol Range. In 1951, the Pistol Range became the Air Gun Range and remained that way until it closed in 1978. It is now used as a church shooting ground. It would remain open as The PistolRange until 1978 when it closed down for good due to increasing regulations placed on airguns by then-Govt Of Oklahoma under newly passed legislation called “An Act To Regulate Firearms And Ammunition” (Pistol bill No 85-302). Prior to this law being passed there had been some local attempts by individuals (primarily businessmen) to establish their own airgun ranges without State government interference; however these efforts failed primarily because state lawmakers felt that such an endeavor would compete unfairly with national firearms dealers who were already operating successfully within state boundaries without having to worry about federal law! Consequently, The PistolRange closure marked not just a loss for local businesses but also an achievement for OU students who had been able to use this facility prior thereto – something that has yetto be duplicated today!
