It lies on the edge of the Pawnee National Grasslands and is situated on a low ridge overlooking the Arkansas River valley to its east and the Cherokee Nation to its west. The first people to live in Stillwater were Caddo Indians who arrived there around 1819. They hunted game here until they came into contact with white settlers in 1829, when traders brought over Indian slaves from Texas. The Caddoes had no use for human beings so they released them back into their own community near Fort Smith, Arkansas. Eventually, other tribes joined forces with the Caddoes against white settlement in what became known as the Battle of Stillwater Creek. In 1876, while still part of Indian Territory,stillwater was chosen as site for a new county seat because it was thought that less populated areas would be available for whites if it was moved to Tulsa or elsewhere. The townspeople chose to stay put and resisted annexation by Tulsa until 1907 when an act of Congress made Oklahoma an all-Indian state. Some non-Indians who lived in Stillwater during this time include oilman John Denton and his wife Nellie Denton (the daughter of cattle rancher George Denton). John Denton leased land along Clear Fork River from Chisholm County for oil drilling in 1901; he also built what is now called CenturyLink Center on land leased from Chisholm County in 2002 before later selling it to Comcast Corporation for $2 billion dollars. Other early residents included bankers Jnoef Beal and Edward Murray who opened up a bank downtown between 1906 and 1913; A&P Co., Inc., founded by grocery store magnate Al Pease in 1927; trucker Harry Hebert who ran a restaurant here from 1929 until his death in 1951; airplane manufacturer Boeing Companyfounder Charles Lindbergh Jr.'s son Josephine Lindbergh's husband Irving "Ike" Lindbergh (son of aviator Charles Lindbergh); general manager Sam Houston's younger brother Martin Bigham (bacteriologist Dr.; died young); Clarence Nash (coach at Sooners football team from 1925-1931), Lillie Mae Nash (daughter of Senator William Fessenden)and artist Wanda Hinds Kerridge.(Hinds Kerridge passed away aged 93 on October 10th 2018). In 1907 Stillwater became one of three counties - together with Haskell County east of Tulsa - carved out from Indian Territory when Oklahoma became an all-Indian state. At first most residents consistedof farmers living near irrigation canals delivering water to towns like Jenks and McAlester while some men worked construction or operated businesses such as grain elevators or post offices.(page 4) As more people arrived they began buying land which formed neighborhoods today including Great Lakes Village (), Midtown (), Northwoods () etc.).
