Tahlequah is a town in Osage County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The Tahlequah post office was established in 1907. It is the county seat of Osage County. The town was named for Daniel Boone, who first settled in what is now Tahlequah in 1836. In 1907, the first post office in the town opened under the name of Post Office No. 2. In 1912, the Territorial Legislature designated Tahlequah as the county seat of Osage County and it has held that status ever since. In 1925, Oklahoman Clements Minton developed a oil well near Tahlequah and began production which led to increased development around the area until World War II when production stopped because of bombings by American forces targeting Japanese civilians living in Oklahoma City and Tulsa. During World War II, many military personnel were stationed at Fort Sill on nearby Choctaw Nation land while they were contesting war with Japan; someSoldiers built houses within sight of their barracks inside TAHLEQUAH GAS STATION - now part of OKC- during this time period housing units called "Houses With Gas" or HAMMERED HOUSES FOR MILITARY PERSONNEL can still be seen today along Industrial Dr., just south of I-40 exit ramp off OKB4 (exit 491).

Tahlequah was a small town in southern Oklahoma until the 1930s when it became part of the new Wichita Falls, Texas, settlement. The first white settlers arrived in 1881 and founded the town on land that had been Indian Territory. The name Tahlequah is thought to be derived from the Shawnee word "taloka" meaning "chiefdom." In 1892, Colonel John C. Frémont established a military post at Tahlequah and named it Fort Reno after General John A. Logan, commandant of California's First battalion of volunteers during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1907, Tahlequah absorbed nearby Clear Fork as its second incorporated municipality. In 1925, Wichita Falls annexed Tahlequah and other towns within its boundaries; this prompted an effort by local citizens to change their names back to their original ones. On November 8, 1930, they succeeded with a referendum vote. The final result showed that 87 percent of residents wanted to keep their original names while 13 percent chose Wichita Falls' new name - Reflecting Community choice program - which was chosen because it had been recommended by a government commission appointed to study community business issues in Wichita Falls County. The old fortifications around the town were demolished between 1935 and 1940 during construction of Interstate 44 which bypassed Tahlequah entirely. Today only remnants of these walls remain: foundations for two towers can still be seen west of US 66 near milepost 12 on Highway 61 about six miles north of present day Wahpeton Creek Boulevard in downtown Tahlequah

Tahlequah was founded in 1881 by the Choctaw people. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, and it soon became a important center of commerce and culture. In 1907, Tahlequah was renamed for General George Custer, the famous Indian Wars general who died in battle in1876.
