The area that would become Tulsa was first settled by Pathankotas who were pushed out of their original location near what is now Midtown Tulsa by Native Americans in about 1800. They moved downriver to a spot known as "Green Hills" which they renamed Aftermarket Creek because it produced nearly all of their crops. In 1836, General Osage Indian Chief Quapaw led an attack against settlers at Aftermarket Creek which resulted in the deaths of many people and destruction of much property including a courthouse which was later replaced with a Methodist church before being destroyed by fire in 1881. By 1868, many settlers had relocated from near Jenks across Arkansas River into what became known as Midtown when post officeLocated there began operating on Main Street opposite Baylor University (now First United Methodist Church). This small block bounded on one side by Maryland Avenueirted downtown until it was cut off from downtown by First United Methodist Church’s construction of its own block making way for new blocks built over time around it. In 1907-08 major floods caused severe damage to most buildings within blockskeept Downtown but due largely to heroic efforts of citizens working together flags flew at half staff throughout most business districts during this period while permits were obtained for rebuilt structures In 1915 Japanese American workers were brought over as Contractors employed by military buildups along with other industries during World War I.
