In recent years, however, some residents have voiced concerns about how diverse Ashland's demographics have become and whether this has led to uneven economic development within the community or inhibited other types of economic growth. There are also suggestions that city government could do more to support local businesses while still accommodating a wider variety of socioeconomic groups within the town limits.

Ashland, Oregon is a small town in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge located about an hour outside of Portland. The name comes from the Ashland Prairie grasshopper, which was once so common that humans collected its eggs and cooked them. The cattle industry played a significant role in the town's development and until recently, it was home to one of the largest beef slaughterhouses in the United States. In recent years, however, Ashland has become an important center for environmental activism and music production. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oregon were Jesuit Fathers Commandant André Joliet on July 4, 1797 and his guide Gabriel Lassalle on July 5th. They named their new land "Oregon" after France's King Louis XVI who had assigned them this area during his French Louisiana Purchase. At first there were only scattered Native American settlements because of difficult hunting grounds. However, by 1800 there were at least 20 villages including Ashland where people gathered for trade goods such as hides and meat from buffalo and deer. On January 24th 1846 James Kipp had negotiated a treaty with Chief Joseph under which he ceded all rights to the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge tothe US government for $20 per acre (equal to $4 million in 2008). This treaty ended days of violence between settlers and local Native Americans over access to resources such as water and grazing land. By 1860 there were more than 1,000 residents living in Ashland due largely to market demand for beef raised on federal lands
