By 1912, he had purchased over 2 million acres (1 kilometer²) along the Columbia River in what became Multnomah County and built an refinery thereon which made him one of the largest landowners in Northwest America at that time. He also founded Western Electric Corporation – predecessor to Comcast – heretofore unknown outside North America. As early shoppers headed off into Portland on their way home from Sunday market or when they stopped at Forester's store on Alberta Street during lunchtime during prohibition era - all those years ago - they would have seen two large white signs out front: "No Trespassing!" The buildings inside may still be there today - these were Ashland's first stores!

As local businesses transitioned into new eras such as online shopping or digital marketing some remnants still remain today like Foundry Place Shopping Center just east side Of State Street which has been used for various purposes including apartments since 2007 and finally as a Target parking lot until last year when it reopened as Gateway Mall. Today much like then much about Ashland is unchanged except that it’s miles away from downtown Portland where most economic activity takes place however with recent construction going on such as Gateway Mall redevelopment things are definitely changing!

In 1951-1954, during World War II (the war's "Greatest Generation"), most of the buildings in downtown were destroyed by fire. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and Mayor John Witherspoon decided to demolish most of them for redevelopment into housing units. However, some old buildings such as the old Masonic Lodge still stand today asresidential properties.
