Canby, Oregon is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon located on the Willamette River. The population was 1,867 at the 2000 census. Canby is part of the Salem-Keizer Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Canby was George Hance in 1847. He and his family built a log cabin on the riverbank above present day Canby High School. In 1850, John Ralston founded a post office here and named it after his home town of Canterbury, England where he had been born two years before. By 1865, there were only six residents living in Canby proper and it consisted only of a few tents and wagons used for trading goods with nearby settlers and travelers on the river. However, by 1870, when Alder David Eaton erected a frame courthouse near present day Interstate 5, business had picked up considerably with people from all over coming to trade goods and attend school hereabouts. In 1875, Charles Fenton moved to Canby from McMinnville to open a general store which soon became one of the most important businesses in the community during its early years; it still operates as an independent business today (2005). Other early businesses included J & G Wagon Works (1886), Albert Lumber Company (1892), Central Pacific Railroad Depot (1902), Methodist Episcopal Church (1907) and United States Post Office (1920). Edwin Kite opened Biltmore Cafe here in 1923 as one of Portland's earliest restaurants; it closed in 2006 but reopened under new ownership as The Biltmore Café & Grill later that year. Canby was founded in 1876 by J.P. Canby and his brother, W.H. Canby. The first store was built on the east side of town and the first post office was opened in 1877. Canby became a small agricultural town with a population of about 100 people in the early 1900s. In 1916, the town annexed neighboring Linn County to form a new city-County government which continued to operate until it merged into Portland in 1997.
