In 1824, John McLoughlinfounded McLoughlin's Ferry across the Willamette River near present day Salemburg to provide transportation between McMinnville and Eugene, Oregon. This ferry became known as McLoughlin's Ferry Road because it connected those towns directly with each other rather than via wagon road or stagecoach route. From here, travelers could purchase goods and services from either town without having to go far away and risk weather delays or walking long distances over rugged mountain trails. Although many small communities were founded around these ferry crossings during its early years such as Newport onighter Service (1826), Easton (1828), Tumwater Landing (1829), Allens Creek Crossing (1830) & North Bend Landing(1831), only three permanent settlements were established within Coos Bay itself - First Coast Station(now called Cascade Head Marina), Second Coast Station(later called Fort Clatsop) & Third Coast Station(later renamed Josephine). Today most people think about Coos Bay primarily through its connection to Mount Hood National Park however much history still remains buried beneath the waves including evidence of human activity dating back more than 10 thousand years including artifacts dating back 5000 BC!
