Cornelius is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located about 130 miles south-southwest of Portland. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. Cornelius was founded by Danish immigrants in 1853 and named for John Cornelius, an early settler who homesteaded there. The community first began to prosper as a result of its location on the banks of the Willamette River, but it declined after World War II when petroleum prices collapsed and jobs disappeared from Oregon's booming economy. However, since 2000, Cornelius has seen renewed growth thanks to its unique history and economy. The town's namesake comes from Denmark's first occupation of what is now Oregon: John Cornelius arrived in 1853 with his family to purchase land near present-day Cornelius from the Native Americans. He built a log cabin there and called it "New Salem." By 1865, however, he had sold most of his acreage and moved to Bendigo where he became one of the leading merchants and civic leaders in that city before moving back to Oregon in 1868. In 1870 he married Anna Van Buren (née Crandall) and they relocated their family to what is now downtown Cornelius where they continued trading goods until Anna died in 1901. John Cornelius III then took over running New Salem until his death in 1907; during this time it also served as headquarters for various local farmers' organizations such as the Amish people and lumberjacks In 1909 Cornelia Jane Hutton settled on nearby lot No. 16 which she later donated for use as a public schoolhouse; this building still stands today within walking distance of both Cornelia Jane Hutton Place State Park Headquarters Complexes - home to both government agencies responsible for much of regional tourism (the Department Of Forestry & Wildlife Services Administrative Office Building complex), as well as various cultural attractions including an art museum In 1951 Daniel Jorgensen set up shop at 318 Main Street - currently known as Cornelia Jane Hutton Elementary School - becoming one of first Variety Foods Inc.'s employees west of Interstate 5 In 1973 Donny Olson opened his new hardware store at 2162 SE Stark Street which soon became Home Hardware Plus - servicing many area residents until 1984 when it closed due to recessionary conditions Later that year saw another major change when Harry Andersen bought out Donny Olson's shares resulting in Home Hardware going under common ownership once again In 1992 Northwest Lumber Company opened up shop at 4111 SW 7th Avenue after years being headquartered just east off I-5 across from Kress Supermarket - continuing service into present day In 2006 PacificLodge Inn reopened after serving closure during prior economic downturn period
The first white person to settle in Cornelius was Cornelius A. Clements, who arrived in 1853. The town was founded on the banks of the Willamette River by Clements and his brother, John Clements. In 1855, the town had a population of ten people. In 1861, Cornelius became a city and it had a population of 50 people. In 1865, Cornelius became an agricultural center with a population of 100 people. The town experienced economic stability until the onset of World War II when there were significant decreases in both the population and businesses. After the war, there were increases in both business activity and populations until 1970 when there was a decrease in business activity due to technological advancements that made production easier and cheaper without having to leave their homes.
