By 1870 there were over 100 families living in Hillsboro with 30 businesses operating including two printing presses, four grocery stores, three textile mills, two sawmills, six churches (oneMethodist), sixteen schools (eight primary/elementary levels), twenty-four water systems, twelve light companies, fifteen fire companies and one hospital. Hillsboro experienced significant growth during World War II as both its residents and industry contributed to support war efforts including production at Three Rivers Paper Company (founded 1945) which manufactured paper for military use including parachutes for bombers; local fruits such as apples that were used for ammunition boxes or inside tanks during World War II; steel production at Western Steel Corporation which produced anti-aircraft gunsights for planes or ship anchors during World War II as well as other products such as cars or truck parts during post-war years until its closure in 1957 although some remains extant today within walking distance of downtown where it operates as an arts center called "The Oaks".
