The first European to see and write about what would become Klamath Falls was Jedediah Smith in 1823 while he was on his way from Fort Bridger to points north. He named it after his home state of Maine, as did other early explorers and trappers passing through Oregon country. In 1849 Charley Dexter built a store and hotel at what is now downtown Klamath Falls for travelers along the new road connecting the Great Lakes region with the Pacific Northwest. The town's growth coincided with that of nearbyPortland which began expanding rapidly eastward in response to new transportation opportunities opening up during America's railroad Mania of the 1840s. Downtown Klamath Falls quickly became a popular tourist destination for people from all over Northern California and beyond because of its easy access to both Interstate 5 (the "main" artery linking Portland with Sacramento and Seattle) and numerous streams that provided clean water for washing clothes and cooking meals; as well as its agreeable climate year-round (average annual temperature range: ). By 1870 Downtown had outgrown its original commercial limits within walking distance of each other into two adjacent neighborhoods called "The Square" or "Old Town". In 1886 when Congress created Multnomah County, much like how Washington Territory was divided into counties prior to statehood in 1889, many citizens of Old Town decided they wanted their own county seat - something they achieved through referendum in November 1888 when they elected John Cushing as their first county commissioner. It wasn't until 1959 when Multnomah County moved from nearpost office square eastward down central alley on 4th Street between Vine & First Streets towards Gresham that things really started happening downtown; despite continued opposition by some citizens who felt their residential boundaries were being encroached upon by newcomers - mostly college students living off campus - designation as 'Downtown' finally went ahead without further ado on December 1st 1959! A variety of businesses have been located throughout downtown since then including several banks including First National Bank (now HSBC) which opened in 1907; PNC Bank (now Wells Fargo) which opened in 1921; TD Ameritrade Holding Company Inc., better known today as TD Ameritrade LLC (the parent company behind MSCI USA); Nike Inc.'sOregon headquarters starting construction here in 1990; local artist studios such as Studio 3DOZEN beginning operations in 2004; local breweries such as Rogue Ales Brewing Co.; Asahi Brewery & Spirits located across street from State Capitol building also began production here around this time... so much has changed at Downtown Klamath Falls over these years that it's hard not to feel like an outsider even if you've been living there your whole life! Klamath Falls, Oregon was first known as the Mission Valley. The Klamath River named it after Father Jacob Klamath who founded the mission in 1806. The town was founded in 1856 by John C. Fremont and his wife California Jane. It was renamed Klamath Falls in 1861 by Colonel George Armstrong Custer because of the falls that formed at the confluence of the rivers, which also became known as Devil's Canyon. The town's economy changed dramatically when logging started in the area in the late 1800s. By 1923, over half a million acres (2,000 km²) of forest had been logged and much of what is now downtown Klamath Falls was built up around this time. After World War II, many jobs were created in aluminum production and other industries but during the 1990s, downtown began to lose its importance as a commercial center due to suburban development across the river. However, recent efforts have led to revitalization of downtown as a retail and entertainment district with new restaurants and bars opening up throughout 2016-present.
The Klamath Falls Massacre took place on May 25, 1877, when a group of settlers, led by James Whitman, killed six Native Americans at the falls. The events are also known as the Oregon Trail Massacre.
