Lebanon, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 753 at the 2000 census and grew to 1,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Hillsborough Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town began as an agricultural community in 1875, when settlers arrived from Lebanon, Pennsylvania. The name "Lebanon" comes from a mountain peak in that region. Today, there are few farms remaining in Lebanon, but it is home to a number of businesses and residences. One of the earliest businesses in town was a grocery store and post office. This business operated from 1875 to 1951. In 1902, another grocery store was opened on Broadway by Wm. Howerton and Fannie Weems with assistance from businessman Averill Harriman Jr.. Another early business owner was Mr. John Bogle who started a hardware store on First Street in 1903. That store operated until 1974; however, it left behind many memories including an Iron Man plaque still present on Main Street today! In 1915, two brothers named James and Sidney Snyder bought land near where Lebanon now stands and built what would become the first schoolhouse in Lebanon – which they called “Sidney’s School” (later changed to “Beloved Friends School”). They also founded the Lebanese American Club which served as their social outlet for recreational activities such as playing cards and singing hymns before school each morning! In 1922, local resident Augustus Dyer organized a group of farmers who leased land east of town for experimentalgrowing purposes known as “Oregon Experiment Gardens” (). After several years of trials and tribulations related to bad weather conditions (),Dyer sold his interest in the experiment gardens to Harry Beason for $1 million (). Beason renamed them “Beloved Friends School” () after his then wife Alma (). Mrs. Beason continued to manage Beloved Friends School until her death in 1957; however, due to zoning laws at that time (),the school became property of The Oregon Federation of Teachers (OFT) upon her death! Later additions made by Mrs. Beason included: A library (1954), Baptist church (1959), tennis courts (1960), country club house (1963), fire station/gas station (/ 1987–present), convenience store (.1986)and park (.1987). These additions were all funded through fundraising programs initiated by Mrs .Beason herself! On July 2nd 1984 local resident Pauline Kapp donated 5 acres across from Beloved Friends School along Northwest Expressway for use as an open field research plot for developing new varieties of crops used for food production (). Over time this acreage has grown into what is now known as North Park! This donation helped spur development around Northeast Expressway since it gave rise to commercial farmland adjacent to Interstate 5 just outside OFT boundaries - which currently includes three large shopping malls: Sears & JCPenney anchors both sides I-5., Cascade Mall anchored by Regal Cinemas & Nordstrom Rack anchors one side I-5., & Pacific Spirit Outlet anchored opposite Cascade Mall!. Additionally nearby residential neighborhoods have seen significant growth including: Lebanon Oaks (), Laurelhurst (), Glen Ellen (), Beaverton () & Happy Valley (). All these developments took place while neighboring schools - like Howard University - failed or delayed expansions plans due To budget constraints!
