Legend has it that pioneer John Day discovered gold near present-day Newberg while exploring the Rogue River region in 1851. In 1883, George Bird Newberg arrived in central Oregon looking for land to settle and purchased 8 acres (3 ha) near present-day downtown from James Daly on which he built a house and outbuildings known as "The Farm". He named his new community "Newbern" after his birthplace of Canterbury, England where he had been born just two years earlier. In 1886, following surveys conducted by USGS employees working under Atherton Surveyor General Jno Mapes Ward Jr., new settlement boundaries were Drawn up including parts of today's adjacent townships: Beaverhead County (northwest), Josephine County (southwest), Newton County (southeast), Andover Township (east) and parts of still unincorporated areas east and west of Beaverhead Creek within present day Josephine County limits. In 1895 Alfred Cushman opened an grocery store on Main Street which became a popular stop for travelers along the Rogue River corridor between Portland and Eugene. By 1902 there were five stores operating within walking distance of each other with annual sales totaling $1 million; this period marked an increase in commerce along the river corridor due to increased transportation options available thanks to railroads such as Union Pacific Railroad Corporation’s creation of Portland & Eugene Railroad Company). During World War I munitions production advanced significantly throughout central Oregon due to advances made by American inventor Drillington Denny with his patents related thereto; much construction activity took place during wartime including rural road building necessary for artillery ammunition storage locations across eastern Oregon located around Prineville Lake; also during this time local rubber works developed into one of most significant industrial enterprises within central Oregon employing over 1,000 workers during that time period producing products such as tires, shoes and Bakelite materials used extensively throughout North America dur
