Ontario, Oregon was organized as a territory of the United States on January 3, 1859. It was named for the Ontario River in Canada. The first U.S. post office in Oregon was established at Oregon City on November 15, 1861. The area that is now Oregon and California were explored by Spanish traders in the early 17th century, but no settlements were built until after 1849 when gold and silver were discovered in those regions. In 1851, the US government decided to give parts of California to Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American War. This gift left much of California unorganized and undeveloped except for a small strip along the Pacific Coast wheregold had been found earlier that decade. On February 14, 1857, Congress passed an act creating Whatcom County from portions of San Francisco County and Douglas County including present day Ontario Township in southeastern Oregon
