Oregon City is a small, picturesque town in central Oregon. The population was 8,816 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Multnomah County and the second-largest city in Oregon after Portland. Oregon City was founded by John C. Fremont on May 16, 1846 as the first post office established in Multnomah County. The name of the town was changed to Oregon City on March 2, 1854 to honor Ulysses S. Grant during his visit to Multnomah County. The original downtown area included only a few buildings and consisted of a square block that stretched from State Street east to First Avenue and west to Taylor Street. The downtown business district gradually grew with new construction until it covered most of what is now Northwest 3rd Avenue between State and First Streets NW., making it one of the most commercial areas in Portland before its annexation by Portland in 1912. In 1916, Oregon City became an incorporated town with expanded boundaries; today it includes portions of Southwest Portland and Southeast Portland. Oregon City experienced a period of rapid growth starting around World War II due in part to its location adjacent to two large military installations: Fort Belknap (now McLoughlin Army Airfield) on SW Morrison Road and Fort Devens (now Indianola Army Ammunition Plant).
