Oregon City is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Snake River Plain east of the Cascade Range. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland metropolitan area. The first Europeans to see and explore what would become Oregon City were French missionaries, led by Father Jacques Marquette in 1805. In 1826, fur trader George Vancouver explored and named the region "Cascade Country" after his mountain peak near present-day Hood River Valley in Washington State; he thought it might be a potential site for a fur trading post because its altitude and fertile soil made it an ideal location for agriculture. In 1847, United States surveyor John McLoughlin recommended thatPortland be founded as an agricultural center on the west bank of the Willamette River opposite Scio Island (now known as Newport), due to its good soil and location between two great rivers—the Columbia and Snake Rivers—making it easily accessible from anywhere in Northwest America. The first permanent residents arrived in January 1850 when wagon trains carrying settlers crossed into what is now Oregon City from Benton County, Arkansas; many of these pioneers wereMethodists who had immigrated to North America under Christian auspices just before they ended up living among Native Americans here at this time (see Mormon Settlement). In February 1850 Congress designated Port land northwest of Fort Walla Walla as Columbia Landing District; when Company W Sac & Co., merchants speculating about land grants downriver realized there was potential for commerce here too they persuaded General James Kulkarni to sell them 1 million acres including parts of today's Portland along with most of today's Spokane County A few months later commissioners selected Kulkarni's brother-in-law David Sacks as port officer with jurisdiction over all 412 square miles within modern Portland limits which included much of today's Beaverton and Tigard communities At this time river transportation was only by steamboats or horseback riding which limited trade opportunities so NW [northwest] farmers started cultivating wheat, hay, potatoes etc.; dairy products came next By December 1850 Hernando de Soto had discovered Gold Nuggets off Astoria Point southeast of present day downtown ORC [Oregon City]; this discovery led rapidly to increased traffic through Bandon Bay Bridge onto Willamette River where nuggets could be collected en route downriver to Lima (today called Lewiston) By 1860 over half a million people lived within 5 miles (8 km)of Portland while less than 1% lived within 5 miles (8 km)of any other American city Portland became an important seaport for shipment of goods coming into and out of Northwestern America during this period; lumber from various sources such as Douglas Fir trees exported via ship upriver reached New York City via Colman’s Ferry before reaching Boston’s wharves around mid-1860 Railroads arrived late but did not take hold until after World War I when industry developed outsidePortland creating new needs elsewhere During World War II: There was extensive bombing raids againstORC by Japanese aircraft during 1942-45 causing extensive damage although no loss human life

This issue eventually led to Measure 97’s passage throughClackamas County voters on November 2nd as a way for King to make much needed repairs/updates both inside and outside her beloved downtown core3 . Despite this setback though Mayor King has made strides towards improving transportation options such as bike lanes4 ; increasing access for pedestrians/cyclists5 ; creating new public housing6 ; implementing a Downtown Development Authority7 ; and working hard towards reopening Main Street adjacent to Interstate 58 It is no wonder then that many have dubbed Oregon City “The Newitas Capital Of The World9” due largely to all she has done for residents - from expanding services offered within her limits (such as free parking)10to creating or developing several innovative initiatives11 like BikePortland which has seen biking become increasingly popular among visitors12 – something never before seen or experienced outside major cities world-wide13
