When the first successful firearms trials were conducted in Oregon City, it wasigham that an interest in using horse-drawn artillery to shoot targets at night was aroused. Oregon City, Oregon was founded in 1847 by John McLoughlin and his wife, Abigail. The city was named after the then-new state of Oregon, which had been organized two years earlier. The town quickly gained a reputation as a trading post and growing center for agriculture. In 1853, the local legislature designated Oregon City as the capital of the new state of Washington. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, reaching its peak population of 508 in 1861. However, Portland rose to become the dominant metropolitan area in Northwest America during this time period. By 1870, however, Oregon City's population had plummeted to just 150 people due to unsuccessful efforts to attract large urban settlements east of the Willamette River. In 1882, Congress passed a bill establishing an overland route from California through south central Oregon to Promontory Summit onthe north shore of Lake Sammamish. This road would be known as thecontinental railroad and it would play a significant role in bringing about dramatic changes for both Oregon City and nearby Portland over the next century. After several failed attempts at development along this route within chronological order – including one led by McLoughlin himself –Oregon City finally achieved substantial growth under its current name in 1886 when construction began on what is now Interstate 5 across from downtown. During World War II, many workers from eastern United States came to work on Project Tule Canoe Factory near present-day Bend before returning home following hostilities; these workers are often considered pioneers of modern American agriculture. Although much progress has been made since then – including suburbanization and multi-family dwellings becoming more common –much remains unchanged about how these early pioneer days have shaped both contemporary urban life and local history overall.
