The first bullets were created in 1851 when Dr. John Fenton developed a way to fire small rounds from a gun that had previously only fired cannonballs. He called his new weapon “Fenton guns.” In 1898, Portland was the center of the country during the Spanish-American War. Bullets began flying through the air and damaging buildings all over town. One bullet even hit a building on Northwest Sixth Avenue and damaged it so severely that it required demolition several years later. Bullet damage is still visible today in many parts of downtown Portland! The proliferation of firearms led to increased need for bullets, and by 1907Portland had become one of the leading artillery cities in America due to its proficiency with rifles and shotguns. In that same year, Portland became home to its own ammunition plant which continued producing Bullets until 1945! The OHS library houses important collections about other cities as well including Baltimore (1783-1871), Buffalo (1814-1914), Omaha (1885-1968), Rochester (1694-1983) and Tulsa ( 1907-1987). All these cities shared some commonalities but also had their own distinct personalities which are evident in our libraries' holdings about each one: for example, Baltimore featured a large slave trade industry while Buffalo was home to several rich farmers who developed an extensive railroads empire during the late 19th century; Omaha hosted numerous world fairs throughout its history while Rochester became known for its production of high quality steel products; Tulsa offered opportunities for African Americans to gain employment at many different levels during this period

The first permanent settler in what is now Portland was John Sutter, who arrived in 1847. In 1855, Portland became a territorial capital when Oregon was organized as a country. The area around present day DowntownPortland became part of the city Limits district on February 14, 1865. On November 3rd, 1888, a fire destroyed most of downtown Portland; only Tower Bridge (now known as Park Avenue) escaped damage. After years of debate over how to rebuild downtown Portland, City Council voted 7-1 on July 29th 1912 to build the new State Capitol on 8th Avenue between SW Morrison and SE Yamhill Streets; this event is often called "the founding of modernPortland."
