Redmond was founded in 1853 by James W. Redmond and his brothers. The first store was a small mercantile business on the corner of Seventh and Main Streets. In 1861, Redmond moved to its present location at South Fourth Avenue and Washington Street. In 1865, the City of Redmond became a city with its own government and elected James W. Redmond as its first mayor. By 1887, there were 10 stores in Redmond and over 100 residents.
